Transportation In Wellington

Wellington has an excellent public transport system, primarily consisting of a fleet of diesel and electric trolley buses.

Check Stagecoach for timetables, routes, and other information. By telephone, call their Ridewell line at: 801 7000 anytime.

A fun trip is the historic Cable Car, which runs from Lambton Quay to Kelburn. At the top is an entrance to the Botanic Garden, along with the Carter Observatory and Planetarium. Check out the beautiful harbour views and Cable Car Museum.

For transport to the South Island, use the Interislander Ferry service, which makes daily trips across the Cook Strait. Standard time is three hours on the Arahura or the Aratere, or 2hrs, 15 minutes on the Lynx. Cars and trucks can be included. Arrival is in Picton, where you can then take a train to Christchurch, or other destinations.

Greater Wellington (formerly the Wellington Regional Council) has information on getting around the whole Wellington area.

Wises Maps provides searchable online maps for all of New Zealand.
